Skoda octavia is a good shout, heard nothing but good things about them. Or if you want a curve ball alternative try looking up a Renault megane scenic RX4 my wife has a 1.9 td and its been great for lugging kids and all the bits that go with about and because all the rear seats come out I use it now and again for van type duties that I can't do with my little terios. Plus being 4x4 its quite usefull in the snow

No offence but Renault enjoy one of the worst reliability ratings of all the marques; sad but true.

In 2007 I test drove a new Octavia 1.9 TDI 130 (Laurin & Klement) estate and an Avensis T3X D4D. The decision was too easy; reliability in this instance wasn't my problem, comfort and refinement was; the toyota was the significantly more refined car; quiet and smooth; just not as uber-cool at that time. I'd had an '53 Golf GT TDI 130 prior to this and an '04 Mondeo Ghia X tdci so knew what these things should feel like. Got in colleagues octavias subsequently and an A4 and the toyota was still the sweetest motor.

Skoda Octavia 2.0TDI - got a bit of go and I regularly get 57mpg driving normally and 60+ mpg driving like a typical Skoda driver:blushing:

Put 70k miles on mine in three years and it has been a good work horse with no issues!

Running a 55 plate 4x4 Octavia Estate. Great machine in the mud and snow. Cavernous boot, great mileage as Spud says.

All my kit goes in it piece of cake and if the truck is in the garage it easily pulls the chipper.definitely recommend.

Those things are solid, traded mine in for a 406. What a mistake that was.

I had a 406 Hdi estate which I bought with 160k on the clock which I ran until it had 250k on it. The only problem I ever had was with the electric seats causing the airbag light to keep coming on. I only sold it because I needed a 4x4. :001_smile:

Yeah we had an N reg (95) 405 1.9 turbo diesel with almost 300,000 miles but the tin worm got to the chassis first; shame.

Got a xantia (98) now with the same lump but only got 89k on it - not even run in; got given it! Estate with tow bar and very tidy - ticks a lot of boxes for errands, quoting etc.
