Hi all,

My laptops going totally wonk!

Really need to replace it this week or next...

All i do is do invoices, quotes, banking, internet and have plenty of photographs.

My stumbling block is i know nothing about computers or what to get!

I want something decent, that lasts more than 2 bloody years (if thats possible) hate computers that are slow etc.....

I use microsoft word etc.... i've found out that computers dont even come with that anymore? ha! rediculous!

Want something PURELY for business.... so desktop not laptop....

seen apple mac mini... that looks good

seen a lenovo in argos that the computers built into the screen... that looked good.

What do i go for? im stuck. What do i have to spend to get no hassle?

Ideally around 400.00 mark.... but not sure if thats level entry/rubbish stuff?:blushing:

any help greatly appreciated

Chris

For £400 I'd go to an independent specialist and get a lot better value for money. I know you Yorkshire men like that.

I'd go for something with a decent base ie processor hard drive and ram. You can get good mother boards to link it all together that will run a screen through HDMI.

I could probably build you one for £400!

Get a Mac/Mac Mini if you can afford it and run a dual operating system. Or have a look at somewhere like 'Morgan Computers' or 'Laptops Direct' or even Dell.

For your stated needs, you don't need an all-singing-all-dancing computer. You also don't a dedicated graphics card, a ton of RAM or a massive HD. If you have a choice between RAM or HD size, go for RAM and make sure you either get an external backup HD or a cloud account, such as 'Google Docs' or 'Dropbox'.

If you need to move around with your data, get a laptop or similar. If you don't need a mobile workstation, get a desktop. You'll get more bang for bucks with a desktop but you don't need to be spending more than £300 on a PC/laptop; unless you decide on a Mac. If you presently have a desktop PC and choose to stay that way, save some money - use existing monitor & cables and just get the PC.

If your gonna go anywhere don't go to pc world or Currys. The amount of crap the computers come with is unreal. It's no wonder they soon slow down.

I have an old laptop I reinstalled fresh windows on without all the rubbish and its lasted a lot longer. Spent 500£ on a desktop tower only and it lasted 5 years before everything was way out of date. It still ran fine. 20 months ago I spent another 500 on some top parts. Ram, processor and motherboard and picked up a big hard drive. I can see that lasting longer than 5 years.

The Mac mini would be my next choice really too! Go for the mid range one which is £600 and something. Getting the intel i7 processor will be a big difference future wise.
