I have no problem quoting serial numbers on equipment I have for sale and our local chainsaw dealer (Gustharts) will not service or supply parts for any equipment that does not have a serial number, and good on them for doing so. It is a pity that others do not follow suit. As for manufacturers, a stolen machine is usually another sale, so why close down that window of opportunity. There is no easy answer. Deals done in lay byes, on mobiles only or where any hint of dodginess is suspected need to be avoided like the plague ( I know only too well from painful experience in the past). An honest bod will have no bother with giving all his details and transacting the deal at his premises/house from where he operates a bon fide business.

Ive got to say "well done david for actually saying that ,re manufacturers point of view.i do think they should take a little more responsibility however.it pretty flimsy these little aluminium labels that are riveted to the machines.as for selling,if I cant find a little out about who im selling to I don't ever invite them to our yard,so id opt for a public car park or as such for the transaction.its not just the buyer who needs to be wary.

Could Openly advertising a serial serial number just provide someone with information required to give a "warm" chipper a new ID?

how about if when the picture was taken of the ser plate could the seller cover like 2 numbers with a finger or something and then that way the seller protects their ser number and the buyer or someone looking for there nicked kit would be able to tell its theirs. I wouldn't buy unless i had a feel and play with it in there yard if am honest i feel ebay is getting very dodgy at the moment and like one of the guys said a lot of theft at the moment its a minefield :confused1::confused1:
