Tree ident... Look before you leap

Recommended Posts

Here's one I put on Instagram, in the hope that some 'other side of the world' type would post a considered answer.

Regrettably so far nothing I'm happy with.

Just for the heads up, and I make no apologies for sounding arrogant, if it were a tree that we've all heard of... I would know it (and spell it in Latin)!!

I know it's tricky from a pic'y.. but have a go if you are happy with all the key ident features (not just one)😁🎓

Tree is a slow grower and currently 20ft high or so... Leaves as big as your open hand. Fluffy white seed clusters seemingly from catkins. Heavily veined leaf and not exactly poplar shape ! :-)

Thanks ...

Defiantly looks like some kind of Pop from the seeds.

When the big ones round here produce seed it make a right old mess, hence there other name of "cotton trees", there is a road here called Heifer Lane, but every one calls it Cotton Tree Lane. There are some big Black Pops at the bottom of the hill. They only seed occasionally, many years apart, but when they do its pretty impressive.

I've read that this seed debris is, in part, responsible for the rarity of Popula nigra. Many were removed resulting in the high population of clones , which were very susceptible to ventura.
