You'll never be really short of work with your skills there se7enthevil! Furniture Maker London in High Wycombe (Bespoke Furniture Maker and Repairer) will have some competition from you:thumbup:

I'm assuming Maidenhead College? Perhaps Wycombe. There's still good skills being taught that are the envy of the world!

i went for a job there about two years ago and actualy got and interview (apparantly they only select good ones for interviews!) but in the end they wanted a furniture maker and not a bench joiner and it was they who suggested i do the course in oxford.

linfords is such a small company its hard to get a place there even when jobs do get offered as the only pick the best.

Im thinking about doing a course myself, how much did it actually teach you, or is it just about the quals?

it depends how much you presently know and in what field.

im already a qualified bench joiner and this was the level 3 course so just refeining some skills but learning others like diong dovetaild by hand on curved surfaces, thats tricky...

muttley why dont you pop round and we'll talk what sort of things you wish to learn about.

where about in bucks are you???

Live in winslow near Milton keynes. I might take you up on that offer. Flat out for next few weeks, but will drop you a pm at some point soon. I'm trained in site carpentry, first and second fix, but anything more is self taught. The bench and table you made I could make to the same standard, and is my kinda style. but I lack the finesse for the sideboard. Some tuition would help there, but im undecided if I want to make that style of stuff. Saying that I love the craftsmanship, just not the classic style. I do crave knowledge in all things wooden, living or dead.

let me know when your free then.

the finess is definatly the part you learn when you do coures and do it for a living. every thing on that unit was pretty much done by hand, the only exception being the top as cedar easilly chips so i took advantage of the wide belt sander they had at college. i probably could have done it with a fore plane and a belt sander though...

you possibly dont have some ofthe hand tools i used to create the unit but they dont cost too much on ebay and once you buy them you can use them for the rest of your life...

i may not decide to make items in that style but it happened to suit the house which is edwardian.

muttley9050. Is that wonderful house still in Horn St? We used to call it 'the manic house' as it was such fun, all painted and wriggly:001_tongue:

My Kiwi friend loved it as it was in his style and when he went home he built something similar.

Shame you missed that 'sale' as there was also about 2.0 m3 of Deodar planked in 2" x 8" x 12' boards. Still, that's in the past now.

se7enthdevil. Re the above 'sale' I managed to pass on to Mr Linford some of that pile beforehand. Yew and Ash, all the other bits were too big and needed a fork truck and a lorry which no one had at short notice.

I'm glad you two are talking!

Yes mate the house is there still. Went to a auction last sat of furniture maker retirement. They were giving the stuff away, stocked up on pippy oak , yew ash and a pallet of oak burr, average price was about £5 cu/ft. Wish I had more storage. No cedar though, that would have been nice.

here is a table and benches that was commissioned by john k requesting oak garden furniture including some of the production stages.

For anyone else who us thinking of getting Steve to do some work for them I'd be happy to recommend him.

We're really pleased with the table and benches, and he did a great job. Thanks!
