Private insurance on commercial vehicle

It may well be cheaper.

I used to run a Vauxhall Combo 1.7l diesel, non-turbo, then a Ford Escort van, 1.8l diesel, non-turbo, as private vehicles. I could only find two insurers who would do it so there was no competition. Best quote I could get was Norwich Union at around £550 fully comp.

I switched to a Volvo V70, 2.4l turbocharged diesel, with towbar. Insurance dropped to about £200 fully comp. Car = lots of competition.

Insuring a commercial as a commercial has plenty of competition, so could drop costs.

I think with the Nav, they are classed a commercials full stop. I had problems getting quotes from some insurers as that model wasnt in the manufacturers list for Nissan.

Kept being redirected to commercial. I had already commercial but was just trying to get a comparision.

UFU/NFU

Steyr Daimler Puch Van, had been used commercially, I bought off the company.

NOT ONE of the big name insurers would touch it.

Finally tried the UFU (hadnt tried them sooner cos they were always too bleeding expensive for car insurance)

I mentioned S.D.Puch.

The young man checked the spelling, tapped a few keys on the keyboard and asked?

"Which model Sir"

And then gave a very senseibly low quote, as her only be Group 4 (new ratings)

A little of track but if you looking to save your hard earned here's an angle: if you buy a "commercial" vehicle (van, LR utility, SUV etc) the entire cost of the vehicle may be tax deductible if you do a self assessment tax return. So the bigger sum could be:

Cost of vehicle

+

Cost of insurance (annually)

-

Tax rebate

=

True value

Obviously, personal circumstances apply, but could be worth consideration.

The Nav seems always to cause problems with insurers if not commercial.

Does anyone know if there are any problems if you have a Navara which is 100% private and not used for any business purposes but insure it on a commercial policy?

A friend of mine has one and has had trouble finding private insurance for it, the insurance broker simply recommends going for a commercial use policy, but strictly it isn't a commercial vehicle. What is the downside of this?
