These are some old pictures of an incident at Eckington Bridge, Worcestershire. (the bridge dates from the late 16th or early 17th century. I was working as a mechanic at the time at my Fathers garage in Defford. Word got round that a tractor had fallen off the bridge, so I grabbed my camera and belted down there in the works Mini Pick-up! The farm worker apparently managed to get himself out and swam to the riverbank…..

Sadly a similar incident happened a few years ago in Kelso, the fire engine clipped the kerb and crashed through a stone wall very similar to your pic. One fireman was drowned I think.

As Tommer9 says, the recovery wagon is an "FV1119A Tractor, 10 Ton, 6x6, recovery, heavy", better known as a Leyland Martian, but I bet it doesn't have the original Rolls Royce B81 eight cylinder petrol engine any more.

Nice to see pictures of one at work. One almost as common as the Scamell Poineer and Explorer (everygarage seemed to have one), but a rare sight now that vehicle recovery has gone high-tech.

I can remember going to the last ever Army vehcile disposal sale at Ruddington in the lates 70s or early 80s - ex-reserve Scammell Explorers in vgc with all the recovery equipment were fetching around £300. I was so tempted - it was only the thought of that Meadows 10.5 litre petrol engine (plus a bit of a parking problem) that stopped me.
