If the ever increasing population on this planet are to be fed.

Most will have to accept "Frankenfoods" or starve.

Or cut to the chase and synthatise protiens and carbohydrates from algae in out an out factories.

Anyway mankind has been "genitically" modifying foodstuffs for 10's of thousands of years, just not so quickly.

No doubt there will be "unintended consequences", but a massive huge asteroid whizzing in from outer space will also cause devestation.

And we CANT stop that.

Mankind will have to accept that our planet is in a constant state of change, and ride with the changes.

GM crops have nothing to do with "benefitting mankind" its all about profit for the companies that provide the seeds which are sterilised. In other words you cant save some seeds from your crop to plant next year's crop. You have to purchase them from the company. Eventually the local suppliers will all go bust because the GM crop seed manufacturers (and that word was used deliberately) can undercut them and then dominate the market charging whatever they like. The lengths that these companies will go to, to eradicate the opposition is astonishing and have highly placed staff in the corridors of power in the US. If you haven't read up on it I suggest you do because it is fascinating seeing how far they will go to peddle their lies and disinformation. Farmers in the US who oppose the likes of Monsanto etc have been dragged through the courts and threatened with bankruptcy just for daring to have a different opinion to them. There's no such thing as democracy any more and the 'land of the free' is certainly not the US.

The community channel did a documentary last year about it interviewing US farmers and activists opposed to GM crops and it had me glued to the telly for an hour and a half.

Very well put!

GM seed provision is all about securing the market NOT solving 3rd world nutrition deficit.

It's time to acknowledge there are areas on the planet that simply cannot sustain human habitation. Pumping food aid into (predominantly) Sub Saharan Africa for the past 30 years has only served to prolong the inevitable.

etheopia, sudan its becoming a desert because the trees were felled for firewood etc now the rains do not come so they are starving if the developed countries want to help which they should then replanting of the forests is needed to stop the desert marching on. much cheaper in the long run than sending in food aid all the time. as for GM crops as other posts been going on for a long time its what they want to do now which is profit orientated and not for the good of mankind need new things like hydroponics.
