big companies V the little man

i'am looking for peoples opinion on working for big companies(iss, fountains,veolia,imrie:thumbdown:) or little private companies. i've got to say some of the bigger ones, especially at the moment when they can pick and choose who they take on, treat you very badly and why doesn't anyone invest in future workers by taking newbies. or maybe i'am wrong.

that's one of my points it's the newbies that are the skilled and experienced of the future and the colleges keep sending them out, to what, the same old mantra no job unless your experienced, no experience without a job. and this magic "two years"

i'am not blaming anyone i asked for opinions. maybe there is more companies and colleges can do to work together. in this current climate what do college leavers do if they don't get a job, is there a time limit after leaving when they should forget a career in arbs.

My experience of working for a large business prompted me to return to self employment. What had been a practical enjoyable job became so unbelievably bureaucratic with so many managers who were just that - all management and no leadership. The IET reported a worrying increase in the same and stress levels are through the roof... I don't miss it. The aforementioned managers are ill equipped to deal with real people which ultimately leads to hostility between the various chains of command - like you say, treating people badly along the way.

People who want to get in to this industry should be on an aprenticeship before a college evan looks at taking them in my view ,I think it would make them know what they are letting them selves in for as well as a good start in what common practices are,plus the experience...

I think that with college leavers they think (as Steve says lack of info from the college) that they are a fully trained and qualified arborist/climber/tree surgeon etc and are made to think that they can just jump straight into arb as a top climber on top money.

 

How many years does it take to become a fully qualified and trained specialist in other professions ie gas fitting, plumbing, electrical etc etc?

 

College's and training centres or whatever you call them definately give the wrong impression imo.

 

As for the large companies I have never worked for them but I would imagine like every large scale company they will have manager's who dont have practical knowledge in the industry that they part manager, this will nearly always cause conflicts with the lads on the tools imo.
