As there has been splitting and especially axe splitting talk recently I thought I would post a picture of our home made bodge to make life easier. Just the tank from an old IBC chopped up with a jigsaw.

No more picking logs up off the floor

When I used to use an axe I used an old tyre on top of a splitting block, pack it with logs and swing away. Dead fast and keeps it all together, no putting the log back on the block in between swings.

The tyre method sounds like it won't really save much time but it really does. Most efficiency gain for a given cost available!

Yup I use that method too. Works a charm if you have some big logs too.

Source an old low profile tyre as well, can fit loads in one of those,

Biggest advantage with the tyre method is you can work all the way around the chopping block, with out having to rotate the logs as you go.

mine is simular idea to woodworks but i just use loads of big rings so if i had the any timber to ring up i do it on the rings as i can stand on then as all the gaps are filled up with saw dust etc

and then just start splitting
