I have bought a metal detector to check for steel rods in stump grind jobs, fed up blowing teeth off! field tests on wet oak give me a good signal at 300mm, can just about pick up 15mm bar at350mm, that means I can tell if the tree was planted with metal rod as suport, in a stump of 600mm diameter , and likely 700mm,most things that size will have grown off centre to the bar with prevailing wind, lean etc. but if you were to take one up a tree to test for bracing you might get sent to the funny farm!,can buy basic kit to do the job for about£150. anyway off up the beach now to find that which others have lost!

I looked into this many moons ago, I ended up with a professional hand held job that broke down, been looking for one ever since and have never found one.

All the hand held wands etc that you can buy dont have the depth. your much better spending a bit of money and getting a proper full size detector, on most of them the main shaft retracts anyway so reducing the room the take up.

I used to take the detector when pricing jobs where I thought the tree may be full of metal work and the customer would not argue when I loaded the price to compensate for new chains

That sums up what i'm getting at, you can take the coil (round search head) off the shaft, and still use the thing . :ohmy:at least I can't forsee me cutting myself with it!:blushing:

I got one for milling when using my Peterson mill.

It's called a Allistec SC250 and cost £150-00. Can detect metal up to 8" and more in wood and it works a boody treat! Super easy to use, has a waterproof head and has found some small and seious bits of metal in trees.

I use it in this clip here on a sweet chestnut.

I got mine with the mill but you can call loglogic and ask how much they are +44 (0) 1884 83 99 99

or they're selling them here ALLISTEC SC250 : Security Metal Detectors : Crawfords Metal Detectors - the most comprehensive range of high quality and value for money metal detectors and accessories on the web

They're so handy I was even thinking about stocking them but haven't got round to it yet!
