Unfortunately isn't hasn't weathered well and after only a few months is looking pretty sorry for itself. It did have a coat of some exterior grade finish (I don't know exactly what) but it clearly hasn't worked very well.

I don't know what the best thing is to do now. Steve suggested I post here to see if someone has any good ideas. What do you reckon?ImageUploadedByArbtalk1395131656.726635.jpg.d9033bf097d3ee2e51ef7c50327396eb.jpg

Shame.

The only really tough low maintenance finish that comes to mind is Sikkens Novatech but it is not natural in colour as all the available colours do not match natural oak. I had to refinish an oak bench that was taking a pasting from the weather and Sikkens saved the day. A yacht varnish could be quite nice but will need regular maintenance. Linseed would make it very dark and but Danish oil might be OK but I have never tried it on an outside job but some on here may have.

The way I see it you have two options, firstly sand and refinish, or leave it to weather. They say with oak that if you don't want to maintain a finish, then you shouldn't put anything on.

My money would be sand and refinish. Try to get a decent finish built up on it before next winter. I would use Osmo uv protection oil, making sure I had at least 5 coats on the horizontal surfaces. Expect to have to recoat it every year though.

You could also think about covering through the worst months to help protect it.

Hi

Have you tried OSMO exterior uv protection,Works well on my outdoor stuff

that's what i coated it with. two coats too, what went wrong???

i thought putting that on it would give john a lovely table for years to come but it's gone an odd colour.

i think muttley's right john it will have to be sanded and refinished.
