As this is a thread awash with milling expertise can I ask if anyone knows if big Swamp Cypress - Taxodium distychum - is of commercial use, presumably in a milled state?

This is a very early enquiry on behalf of someone who hasn't even seen the tree yet but has been told it's 4' thick: let's call it 3'!

Access I'm told is poor so even if it was worthwhile I guess a Lucas Mill would be needed unless the tree's smaller than claimed.

Thanks,

Jon

Never come across it, but Cypress | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwoods) says it should be worth the effort, maybe for cladding or decking?

If access is too bad for a Lucas mill it could be done with a combination of Alaskan mill to cut cants, followed by Ripsaw mill to break down into boards.

Supposed to be very water resistant and fine, dense timber.

36" Alaskan mill with stihl 880. Cuts were fairly quick and smooth. Tree was about 2 foot wide. Mostly took of 2" thick boards through and through and a couple of 1" thick. Any bigger and we'd never have shifted them
