Thinking of upping our prices from £90 - £100 per m3 been fighting customers off with a stick this season.

£70, and er just down the road from ye. Hmmm, ooh, aah! How do u manage that? I've just gone up from £65 and lost a few customers as a result!

"How do u manage that?"

Just what we ask for quality dry logs and the customers seem happy to pay. We don't sell a great deal so don't mind scaring a few off with high prices.

I sell seasoned hardwood with a bag of kindling for £65 and mates pay £60.. Found out yesterday someone I haven't seen in ages is selling them for 70s and its cut no longer than a day or 2 before being delivered.. I asked he he mages that and he said I don't advertise as being seasoned. Ha craziness I think ill be keeping current customers price fixed and new ones will be told £70-£75.

Well if you look on ebay and have a good look the price of a 1 tone builders bag goes for 35 quid at auction

And it dose say seasoned and hard wood

That could be a 1/2 cube bag so still £70 a metre.

If it helps- I've noticed in the world of work other than logs that people are anticipating a price rise- lets face it, everything else is going up. If you don't charge more then how can you afford your standard of life currently enjoyed. I understand it's supply and demand and at the moment demand must be outstripping supply. In that case, put your prices up now and worry about next season when it comes.

I would say you are right by christmas I had not sold 10% of my logs in the last few weeks have sold the lot. Next autumn I think will be slow as money is short and more people will be doing logs because this winter has dragged on again and caused a shortage.

This is the problem; customers don't think a log merchant should be "enjoying a standard of life" - emphasis on enjoying. If you're not a banker it's tough out there. Frankly as a log merchant myself, I don't actually think I am entitled to a comfortable life. That might sound ridiculous and I hate being hard up but we have it so easy these days compared to those in the past. Selling logs pays the mortgage, rates and wifes car for commuting to work and that's it. We can't afford holidays, day trips, luxury foods; evenings out or any extras. We're not enjoying life at all but nor do we think we should be! Content yes, always wanting more - no.
