J you are in Edinburgh, I am in Largs, others are all ove rhe country and world!

This is not a ' what's best for the dog ' thread.

It's a ' I don't want to Hurt anyone's feelings ' thread.

I would be the same, so why to just makeup the craziest excuse ever and take advantage of the situation.:blushing:

Let me start and everyone can add a bit,' Hi Auntie, it's Little J here, I have some great news, Walt Disney is just off the phone, they are making a remake of Lassie and .......

They want me to play the lead . Can you look after the dog while I am away ?

Its a no brainer mate. Anyone incapable of looking after themselves is not capable of looking after a pet that is totally reliant on its owner to make provision for all its needs.

I'm sure you would not want or expect your aunt to have anything but the best possible care from her carers. In our domestication of the wolf, we now have a moral duty to ensure that the dog that shares our homes is given the best possibility of a happy and healthy life.

If thats what it takes, and there is no other course of action you can take to persuade that she is no longer able to look after the dog. Then better that she "grieves" for the passing of a much loved friend, than condemn the dog to anything but the best possible life with its new owners.

Big J. In the best interest of the balance of the dogs life I would make sure your mom has no more contact with that dog. You have a solution by saying that the dog just passed away and put the matter behind you. In time your mom will forget about the dog and continue on without it. Easy enough to say, however if it were me I would not give it a second thought.

It's my aunt to whom the dog belongs, but a fair point. My mother, whilst not a dog person, agrees with me!

No dog deserves a bad life but maybe you could supply one of those horrible little yappy things that they keep in their hand bags. They dont require as much exercise and not as prone to putting on weight as retrievers otherwise its got to be dog dead story.

Why lie?

Stand up for yourself and tell her how well the dogs doing, how much of a fantastic life it's having, the walks, the owners etc tell her you really feel that the dog is far better off in its new life, and your not prepared to give her the dog back, it's only an old woman's pride you'll be hurting.

If that fails and you give in give the dog back to her. It's only a dog at the end of the day, and live with the guilt you sent the dog to a long death

Consensus amongst my five year-olds:

Be honest, honesty is best.

Get her a cat. Cats are much less dependant on people, cats don't need walking, are easier to cuddle if you're less mobile. A cat-flap and a timed feeder will have it looked after properly with minimal attention.

Good luck, Martha and Elisabeth.

Good option, may stop her getting another dog too!
