Looks handy that Morten.

What kind/size of rope does it take and does it chew the rope up much?

maasdam is an ace little tool.

uses half inch rope, bites best with 3-strand but can be used with braided. doesnt seem to do any noticeable damage to rope (3strand at least, only used one once or twice with braided).

much more versatile tool than the wire ones.

There is tension spring which pulls the pawl on. One end is hooked in a tab, the tab is slotted, move the spring from end (of the slot) it is currently at to the other the spring tension then holds the pawl off the ratchet allowing you to pull out the cable. Hope that makes sense. Nick

Sir you are a GENIUS:thumbup:

Got mine to work following this advice and still have fingers n thumbs:lol:

Handy little winch but I did brake it pulling out shrub stumps  my bad. Now I just use this old beast! It's pulled out stumps so big you could stand in the hole and not be seen!

on the down side you are left with a big crater :001_huh:

takes two people to lift it, no idea how old it is

Great bit of kit comes in handy

So how does it work?

Do you just wrap it round and make it into a capstan?

If so, the Aldi puller could be used that way aswell with a bit of botching

The Aldi one cannot be converted into a rope puller, as the wire end is fixed onto the capstan, whereas the Maasdam Rope Puller grips the rope, but releases it after a half turn.

See this Yank video of the rope puller (wrongly described as the "power puller by the "dude")

Only ever used it with a half-inch three strand rope. Works well if tended properly.

More info and recommendations on rope (New England Safety Blue) here Bailey's - Maasdam Pow' R-Rope Puller.

And here http://www.sherrilltree.com/Professional-Gear/Cabling-Tools/Rope-Puller-1204 (The Maasdam Rope Puller Kit works best with 3-strand lines like Tree Master, but will work adequately with solid braid ropes like Arbor Plex, Tree Pro Red or True Blue. It tends to stretch the cover of doublebraid ropes like Super Braid Plus or Safety Blue High-Vee.)
