I used fireboard to back our fireplace with double skin fireproof plaster board as the recess lining for the sides. Where the flue goes up through the ceiling its in a ventillated fire-stop.

Any old sheet of steel will do it. Mine is about 2mm think, got a steel fabricator to cut it to size and cut out a hole for the flue to go through.

What he said. I got the fabricator to roll it so the bend in it followed the curve of the arch over the fire place. Also put a couple of brackets on it to fix it to the back wall. One day I'll get round to fitting it properly. The front is still propped up with a combi spanner that happened to be the right size for the job.

Quickest method is to ram fibreglass wool (loft insulation) up between flue and wall, works really well, cheap n easy!!:thumbup1: used this method for 10 years in previous house.
