Arbtalkers stop picking

Good post Jaime.

There is a lot of misinterpretation, jumping to conclusions and total sense of humour failure about, but there are some awfully dumb posts as well.

I love swapping tips and advice, but I think now if I can only be negative on a thread I better move on without comment.

'Where can I buy a climbing rope?'

'I've just turned 86, have I left it too late to become a contract climber?'

'I've got nearly all my pubes now, and would like advice on which saw/truck/chipper/boots/harness to buy and start my own company.'

Debate is great, slanging matches are not.

Alcohol-fuelled ranting also plays a part, and I used to be a serial offender.

We're all in it together fellas, let's have some more positive vibes (man!).

Peace.

 What Mark said.

Dear all,

I have been reading and posting for nearly 5 years and I have to say that in that time the forum; at times, has become a hostile place.

Whilst I appreciate that some people are not able to express their opinions in writing as well as they may converse, this doesn't mean that every single sentence needs to be analysed and dissected until arbtalkers find fault in what has been written.

Is it not about time that rather than jumping down people's throats about the manner in which certain sentences are formed, or one word highlighting, we should ask a couple of confirming questions, enabling posters to perhaps confirm their point in a different way, rather than feel like they should never post again through fear of retribution.

We do not have to pat each others backs for sharpening a saw correctly, but if we feel that something is not as we would see it we should be able to say. should we not be so bitter and angry;at times, towards each other.

There are a lot of knowledgeable people on here with a wealth of personal experiences and knowledge that should be available. Some of that knowledge may not be relevant to all,but should none the less not be scrutinised because of how it is written.

The only way to get through arbtalk at the moment, at times, is to be second guessing what everybody will respond to your post, and then amend your writing to correct It, before having to justify it. See the number of semi colons in this post!

Come on folks, stop dissecting posts to get a score. Nothing wrong with heated discussion, but a bit of respect for each other wouldn't go a miss; at times........lol

Feel free to discuss/dissect this post.haha:001_tt2::001_tt2:

Purely my opinion, not something that has been discussed with third parties or site moderators or other users, and should in no Way be construed as anything other than an arbtalkers take on things.

Keep safe, and keep smiling, life's too short!!!

HI MATE GOOD POST there mate i love the forum there a good lot of chaps on i no some take the p.ss but then i do put some :001_rolleyes:post no sorry its a good around forum :thumbup:and steve and the mods do a good job

I think all in all it works well. A tip I learnt in the early days is you don't need to post everything you write... and re read what you have written before posting it.

But it's the best forum IMO  and on the whole very supportive and has been and still is good for my business and source of info.

I think that the original post is an absolute load of tosh. Its called lively discussion for all you sensitive little souls. The biggest problem with Arbtalk (in my very humble opinion) is what I refer to as the `Pat on the back brigade` who side with members viewpoint no matter how ridiculous they are just because they are fellow Arbtalkers. The number of `girly` threads recently about `Oh my feelings were hurt when` are shameful ..... now man up and drink another pint like I am

I am inclined to agree, I really enjoy robust debate and find it very sad that some get so upset when others disagree or find fault with their argument.

You do see that on a lot of forums though, its not an arbtalk exclusive

I don't think anyone has a problem with differences of opinion, debate is good and how we can earn new things. It's the childish resulting to insults or accusing someone of somehow being a less decent person because of the differing opinions which is the issue in my view. There's 2 sides to every story, just because someone's on the other side of be fence doesn't make it acceptable to be a knob and call them out, or gang up on the side of a perceived virtue.

The self righteous get right up my nose..... If everyone shared the same view it wouldn't be a forum, it'd be a greasy sausage-fest.....

Dave, my original post is not in relation to people's feelings, it's in relation to people reading posts and focusing and niggling on one particular word and therefore resulting in a breakdown of such lively discussion, as the original poster has to reiterate what they are saying and then end up justifying it with post after post.

Just niggliness in my opinion.

Face to face my sense of humour is sarcastic, but as said you can not sense tone of voice or facial expression to well in a forum.

I do not use other forums so can only comment on how see this forum(at times). I'm not one for applying the 'there there cream' to people that take offence easily, but find reading people reiterating/rewording posts to have to make a perfectly clear point slightly boring.

I have often refrained from commenting on the pat on the back issue as that's a societal issue and not something I'm interested in.
