I'd probably have climbed it after bagging it and having a good swing, but I wouldn't have been keen to work on it. As Hama said, taking the end weight off sometimes results in the rootball resettling.

How long had it been like that?

Whatever, you've got some set on you Quen!

Its hard to tell from the photo. But could you put a lowering like in the top of one of the other trees to the end of the tree and a pull line, then cut the base and pull/ winch it round as its lowered. Ive done somthing like it before but the tree wasnt at such an angle.

I have done similar in the past, but these days that would be putting the Berk in Berkshire assuming location is the same as avatar.

Says the man hanging from a roof without a harness. It had happened a few days earlier and the cross means fell.

Magnetic boots and egged on by peers all under the age of 13.

Aye I knew about the cross I though Kev was putting it up for teasing.

Nice out the ordinary thread though, the things we were allowed to do years ago. I did feel more free, then.

Was the root system windthrown or decayed? If the latter, I would not risk it for a fence. If windthrown & static (i would not climb if there was alot of movement) it would be a climb out as far as you dare & cut off tiny pieces to try & minimise any movement of the tree.

Looks an interesting job for sure

The tree was windthrown and had 2 large lateral roots on the tension side still intact. We wobbled the tree with a rope to see how firm it was, it seemed relatively stable or as stable as a tree like that could be. I then climbed up as far as I dared and dismantled the crown.
