The only way to get round the poor attitude of the private client, ie she doesn't care, is to go for the commercial sector, especially public money. My experience is that they won't let you work on site without seeing insurances/risk assesments/licences, etc. I'm sure there are exceptions but in my area that's what i've found......

So true

Out of interest- would the householder be responsible should you have an accident on her land- I mean irrespective of the fact that you may be hurt/dead. Never thought about this before but could she be sued?

If the client doesn't care about your safety and ois negligent/ignorant towards their responsibilities as a tree owner in the case of an unsafe tree. I wouldn't want to work for them.

Look after number one. Not worth the hassle breaking your back to work for pennies at the end of the day. There are easier ways to make money!

How do you recon that?

The tree is a problem and they are getting quotes to deal with it, that's duty of care to the letter.

If you trade as a tree surgeon you represent yourself as a competent person and they punter is entitled to accept you as such.

If another contractor unrolled a story about unsafe and more kit when the others didn't The punter could be excused for thinking they weren't as good as the others or were padding the price. I am not saying that the OP was either of those but you do need to look at this from the punters side

All absolutely true especially the last sentence.

I cant see how a qualified, insured tree team can make any profit for three days at £925 whilst paying tax on that with the associated costs involved.

The customer is correct though if they cock it up its down to them, what she probably failed to do is check for proof of insurance proof they are qualified and if they do cock it up what guarantee does she have they will honour a repair.

Let the monkeys see the peanuts :P

It is shocking , and the thing is it is not a UK specific thing,

we have seen this happening both here in Portugal and also in France and Germany.

it has esp increased in the last 12 months.

some jobs here are getting quoted for around 1200, when it should be a 5k job, a lot of the companies seem to be very `fly by night ` outfits ,

yet the tight budgeted local councils and private customers are going for them every time.

just south of me a local authority put out a large contract to a company all the way from Lisbon as they were 4k cheaper that the local guys, there is now a government enquiry as it all went tits up !
