He'll obviously be running it as a LGV, CE licence, O-licence, running it on white, regular vehicle checks, same as any other road haulage outfit ?

I agree. But unfortunately running a tractor on the is pretty hard to comply with the law. It’s agriculture, run it on red, if it’s not Agri, it should be on white and thus should be in a different taxation class which is aimed at LGV/HGV and thus pretty impossible to apply to a tractor.  I believe a lorry is the only viable way to stay stay AND legal if hauling on the road.

Really?
I've spent hours on the phone to hmrc,dvla,vosa and many other government departments.
They even said I could have my transit Hort registered, red diesel, no mot or tax.
Tractor hort or forestry registered.

I don’t know the direct nature of your business- I’m not disputing use of using red/tractors on the road when in a proven Agri/horti activity. The problem is if it’s non of the above, a if it’s a non agri/horti/forestry  tractor you can’t use red, you need a C1E license. That was told to me by VOSA and HMRC website seems to back it up. Tree surgery isn’t forestry much like landscaping/groundwork’s isn’t Horti

Im strictly trees.
My only issue is I'll have to get another transit to deliver slabs of milled wood as that's classified as haulage.
And I've bought a car for domestic use.

Hmmmmm. I was told something different. If you are just doing forestry, and NO domestic work or roadside trees, then yes, otherwise its white diesel, and you will also need an operators licence.

I toyed with idea of getting a bigger digger and towing it round with a tractor, but it's not worth the hassle
