shooting season

Recommended Posts

We have seen alot of woodcock at my dads in Cumbria this but however wonder sometimes if they are worth shooting. There is very little meat on them but seem to provide more in the way of a good sporting shot. Personally I dont lift the gun anymore at woodcock. Im getting older and seem to value life a little more dont know if anybody else finds this. I was a sh** shot anyway:001_smile:

Done 8 days shooting so far with poor results on all days.

The shoot i take my two cockers beating on have had better results but still well down on last year.

Just bought my boy a BSA Super 10 so we'll be tapping the local farmers up for some rat and rabbit shooting soon

I usually shoot woodcock if safe but a lot don't and thats fair enough. The game conservancy I hear have advised that woodcock have had a hard time this year, I have noticed we only see one or two a day, so I have asked my guns to give them a free pass this year.

Sounds a good idea to me. After such a hard journey to get here in the first place it seems a pity to shoot them. Dont get me wrong im a keen shooter, lamper, ferreter and carp/coarse and fly fisherman!. Each to there own mind I enjoy seeing woodcock about just the same as hare's.

Some pics of where i was beating today. Was good fun as it was the last day for the syndicate. Did 3 big drives and one smaller drive. Bracken was a superstar on the last drive picking up for the shoot captain. Any other beater would have walked on when seeing a bird drop in the wood but i stayed behind as the wood got narrower to the flushing point.
