About 20 years ago we had a local terrior pack called the norfolk rat catchers who used a hunting horn to gee them up. we used a big bowser full of water and flooded them out,we had about three hundred one morning, lots of terriers.great fun.also have used a scud, any sort of portable 2 stroke engine with a oiley mixture and put the exhaust down the holes

An old pal of mine, sadly now in that big compartment in the sky, used to have use of a big shed on a farm overrun with them.

One day he saw a rat on a high shelf in the corner of his shed,as he was unarmed,he grabbed a handy length of 2 x 2 and as he was about to swing it the rat jumped into his face, and its claw somehow took his eye out.

Ive always been wary of a cornered rat since then.

I used to do a lot of ratting with the terriers, used to get 100+ a week for years. Easiest way was to go round late in afternoon and block the holes up with feed bags, then wait till after dark about 9pm and go back with pack of terriers, flick the lights on and there would be several hundred rats all trying to get down the few holes they had unblocked, mad action for a few minutes before they were all gone. Ferrets will bolt rats if they are any good but can take a fair mauling. Smoking them out is fairly effective. Rodenators are illegal to use on live quarry in this country, not to mention being unsporting.
