Have you considered making an elevator/conveyor?

 

Not as troublesome as you think.

 

Its a common industry, and a lot of stuff is cheap and standardized.

 

You can buy all the standard side channel sections off the shelf, rollers are simply hex bar, a bit of tube cut to length and a plastic bearing in each end.

Belt is most expensive, plenty people around to make one, motor and gearbox is what you need to find second hand...

I have an old bale elevator, the drive is now hydraulic and the old wooden slats have been replaced with stainless ones.

Here is a robust elevator for a reasonable price, which are very common in Sweden.

I don't know if they ship log elevators to UK or have a dealer. There was recommended prices (without VAT) on their Swedish site. Maybe those prices can give an indication..

I have bought them on ebay for £400-£600 different designs some work better than others. I would avoid the miniveyor builders rubble type stuff as its a bit slow and clogs up if you get some steam up. If you pay £200 for a less than suitable conveyor and get a year or two out of it you have had your moneys worth it saves your back and makes the job. 4metres is a bit short and 6 metres too long unless you are trying to make a huge stack.
