Douglas Fir for Firewood?

I understand that softwood such as my Douglas Fir is not suitable for using in a wood stove because of its high pitch content? Four years ago I had about 40 acres clear felled and this was carted off for fencing. I am able to locate some hard wood from wind blown trees. There is I would guess about 20 ton of Douglas Fir logs still lying around which I ignore, but it is a shame as these are now going rotten. Am I doing the right thing in leaving this potential firewood alone?

Someone better let the Scandinavians know as they mainly burn softwood.

Douglas fir is a good soft wood fuel for a wood burner. As long as it's less than 25% moisture content of course, same goes for hardwood.

There's a big misconception about softwood IMO.

Good firewood = any dry timber

Bad firewood = any wet timber

I'm very happy with the 2 year seasoned willow that's on the fire at present. No real difference between that and the extremely slow grown suppressed ash felled 18 months ago.

Burn the fir!
