Defender whine

Any ideas? Defender starting to whine like a turbine when pulling laden trailer. Has been a whiff of clutch a bit this week but today started to whine when delivering. Sounds as though its coming from clutch area and does it when accelerating or on the over run. Any thoughts from the greasy handed clan?

Transfer box starting to go would be my guess, the outside of the cogs start to eat into each outher and make the whine. Drop the oil out and check for little bits of shiny mettle in the oil, replacing it with some thick stuff like ep120 might prolong the life but in the end its a new one needed.

I was starting to wonder if it was both. Gear changing clonk has got quite bad over last few weeks and often a delay before it does it worse in low box.

Could be the flywheel bearing is on its last legs. The smell of clutch is the heat coming from the collapsing bearings radiating into the clutch.

Get a grip man, to transmit that kind of heat into the friction lining the bearing would need to heat the entire flywheel (about 20kg).

Wrecked bearings only get hot untill they destroy themselves which takes moments, it certainly couldnt generate the heat needed to warm a flywheel.

No need to throw your toys out of the pram. :sneaky2: I was only trying to help. Its getting a bit boring with people getting hostile over silly things.
