My dumb mate put a new £35k tennis court surface under this FUBAR’d ash.

Von climbed it a couple of weeks ago but we decided it was too dodgy to rig.

Every major limb had huge cavities.

You can just about see the handle of a Zubat protruding out of one in one of the pics.

Called in a mate with a tracked MEWP to slim it down for a fell between the court and a grain store.

Obviously I would have just grown a set and cut and chucked it blah blah blah.

I've gone and got a platform in a number of times when I've got up there and just thought... I'll get a platform in this isn't the best option right now. [emoji106]

Danny Mac was in on the fell and he has climbed some really hairy stuff.

He was amazed that Von had climbed that high, and nailed half the tree from that anchor (pics don’t show the lower stuff).

Ash is a bastard of a tree when it’s compromised, and I predict a lot of climbers will die when chalara takes hold. (This tree didn’t have chalara).

 

I wish more bosses had your attitude Ian.

I chickened out on this tree a few months ago.

 

 

Oak, compromised at the base, with some dead wood. Didn't want to climb it, the idea was to use the tower and cut off tiny chunks...didn't work, not enough room, too windy, just a bad idea. Backed out and suggested contacting the localish big outfit. Well, long story short, they called me again a few days ago and urged me to have another crack at it, so I bought some more equipment andattacked the job again. Didn't take pics of the rigging setup, unfortunately. Bought a 1.6 tonne Chinese tirfor, and set my dyneema winch rope up chokered to the right hand limb close the the crotch. Then across to a snatch block about twenty feet up a huge Scots pine, then down and mated to the end of my tirfor cable and the tirfor way down in the woods achored to an oak. Left a very generous hinge, three inches, and just pulled it over. Flawless fell. Even missed the small trees in the dropzone.

I spent a couple of hours grinding these 2 stumps out at the local rugby club today. It was quite nice and peaceful kind of day actually.

 

I even found time to make a drone video with some seriously questionable music.

Removal of all the poplars in the first photo, which the majority are completely rotten.

They all have to be winched back as to not damage a cricket ground.
