There's obviously a lot of epicormic shoots, I was expecting to see more extension growth.

 

A percentage of the epi's toward the top appear to have died off, which is not a surprise.

I suspect some of the upper scaffolds won't remain functional for long and decay will colonise them.

 

Great to see old threads (even contentious ones) resurrected.

i personaly think 3 cuts at the bottom would be better. i aint going to say more as i dont want to kick of another toppping/ pollard debate

 

Interesting, regarding the topping / pollard debate, some of our pollards out live many trees which are left alone, our ancient pollards are some of the oldest trees still standing , the photos may look brutal but what we don't know is the reasons why.

Potential for a monolith there in the future, I'd say. Could easily retain that in part as standing deadwood.

Well, been back onto site today, almost 3 growing seasons on from the start of this thread.

 

Yes, the tree is still alive, yes it's caused some conversation on site, but the client is still happy to see the old girl still there. Is this good justification for doing what we did? I'm thinking more so now than back then.

 

For those who are just reading this for the first time, there's a few pages of comments before this, but sure worth the read.

if the client is aware of the future management needed for the tree - fine - its better than no tree at all and is valuable ecologically for sure
