ASPEN fuel why so expensive

Say you use 5l in an average day as a climber & 1 groundy team,an extra £10 would about cover it,out of a job you might expect to pay say £450-550,so no great deal of difference on the overheads.:001_smile:

When you put it like that it does not sound that much more expensive.

But think about it this way £10 a day is £50 a week, lets say we work 48 weeks a year, that tenner a day becomes £2,400 a year, times that by three = £7,200.

That is the difference (for a small company) between swapping the truck or replacing worn out kit every three years.

Just my thoughts :001_smile:

Just up your daily income by a tenner, the customer will hardly notice and you can use aspen and buy new kit:thumbup1: Im going to use aspen from now on, I have a thyroid disorder which I notice gets aggrivated after hedgetrimming allday. Price is irrelevant when it comes down to health.

Its easy to say "just up your daily income by a tenner"

But we read on here time and time again that 2 man crews are going out with truck, chipper, saws and all the other gear needed to do a days work for £250-£300 a day. They may not be able to up their daily income.

And yes price is irrelevant when it comes down to health.

Could there be another slant to this.

I use Aspen the sake of my health,my employees health and the environment.

However, cast your minds back to the Asbestos drama when it was discovered to be bad for us. People started taking their past employers to court due to related illnesses.

Now cast your minds back to the more recent passive smoking court room dramas.

Could we as employers be sued in the future for 'making' our employees use harmful fuels.

I can see a situation where an ex-employee gets lung cancer and tries to sue.

Proving it was not caused by carcinogenic fuels could be very difficult for a defence lawyer.

So a tax break for Aspen or alkylate fuels in general? A discount for a specific brand would be an unfair market advantage, but a tax break for alkylate would be good, I was in Norway recently where you can get a 205l drum for about what we pay for regular unleaded here, I am sure statoil can send it to the uk cheap enough. The point about tax and aspen is that the tax is a lesser percentage of the overall cost because is costs so much more so it can't come down to pump fuel costs by way of tax relief.

So do you disagree that reducing the price is the best and perhaps only way to increase the dealer network and promote sales? If it were available locally and the price were more reasonable I would use it.

I was responding to reasons for the cost and stated that my belief is that the only significant reduction in price may be if the government were to remove the Excise Duty.

This would obviously apply to alkylate fuels in general, not just to Aspen, but the thread is entitled 'ASPEN fuel, why so expensive'

I never mentioned bringing ASPEN down to pump petrol prices, they were your words, but surely a price reduction of 58p per litre would be significant.

This would mean bringing the pre vat price down from £3.02 to £2.45, I for one, would welcome that.

Of course I agree that reducing the price would make it easier to sell, that applies to everthing in my shop, I would love it to be much cheaper.

But the price of anything can only be reduced if the profit margins remain viable, so assuming that no one is making a killing from this stuff, the logical way to reduce cost other than a possible (dont hold your breath) tax reduction will be to reduce costs. This will be best achieved by increasing sales volume, something Anglo American have been striving to achieve in the UK for years.

The last year has seen the largest growth in sales yet, so they are at last getting somewhere. I understand that Aspen is a very small part of their overall business in the UK.

So for those who want to use Aspen the best thing will be to bite the bullet and buy some. Those who have used it see beyond the price.

For those who dont want to pay the price, thats OK. Its your choice.

Surely though, someone somewhere wishes their product to actually sell, so Market forces dictate whether or not it does sell. If the price is too high for many, it will not sell, if it drops, more will convert to the product. It's simple economics. I will not see beyond the price, it's the price that makes the product unviable as an alternative, drop the price and I may well change my opinion.

As I've said before, of the claimed outlets for this fuel, few still exist in my area, so maybe where an increase is claimed it is simply because the list is not updated, new dealers are listed, but those who no longer stock are not deleted. I care not either way really. I've tried to get a couple of local places to buy it in, they've looked into it and just laughed that it will not sell. Shelf space is expensive if a product gathers dust, other products that sell quicker are more likely to be stocked in it's place.

I don't need Aspen, maybe as much as Aspen needs me, and many others like me. The ball is in their court, they can either attempt to play or I'll just buy another ball.

If they can sell supermarket water so cheap then I don't understand the packaging reason for the cost.

Would they ever install it on the petrol pumps- can't see the demands ever being high enough even if 2 stroke oil was banned.

£3 per litre is too high. The govt need to remove tax for health reasons if it really is that good for us. They will save the money in health costs reduction.

I'm sitting on the fence- we have tried it but I am waiting for the cost to fall before diving in. Believe me I do want to go down this route but for now the cost can't really be justified. Or can it:confused1:
