Fuel and Oil Loyalty

Trouble is I wasn't laughing when the Police stopped by to waste some taxpayers money to see what fuel I was using in my Jensen; they dipped its little tank to see if I was running on red! I was on white at the time and kept very quiet but they made it clear that they assumed I only used red when off-highway...

What breed of plod was this? Was it a common or garden variety plod or one of the sub species (motorwaysitonhisarse) or worse yet the variety (motorbikarogansis)

If he had made that statement to me I would have been taking his collar number and making a complaint.

you should get your tracked chipper taxed and insured, then drive it over the tamar bridge on a busy weekday morning!!!

Bugger the insurance, I'll keep it in the trailer if I have to and adjust the spout angle! Tracking over Tamar bridge tommorow morning?! I'd be popular eh?! Would look funny as heck tho from a distance; perhaps not so funny on a windy day whilst staring at some warship down below while trying to keep the thing in a straight line!... Nah!

Recently been told I have to use white diesel in the chipper when roadside and only red off-highway... Anyone else heard this???

that is bullshit what the hmrc or whoever is telling you that

go to the hmrc web sit and look up "notice 75"

4.2 Does any separate machinery on my road vehicle also have to use fully duty paid fuel?

You need not use fully duty paid fuel for your separate machinery so long as it has its own fuel supply and auxiliary engine separate from the vehicle’s fuel supply and engine. You must use fully duty paid fuel if the vehicle’s fuel supply or engine drive the separate machinery. If your vehicle is allowed under section 8 to run on rebated fuel, any separate machinery can be similarly fuelled.

4.3 Can I store rebated oil in auxiliary (belly) tanks on a vehicle or trailer?

Yes, but only in fuel tanks not capable of connection to the engine used to propel the vehicle (unless it is an excepted vehicle). The standard running tank(s), whether connected or disconnected, must contain only fully duty paid fuel. Rebated gas oil must not be taken into the standard running tanks or auxiliary tanks fitted to vehicles or trailers except where these tanks are solely and permanently connected to the auxiliary machinery (e.g. refrigeration motors). All other tanks on a vehicle, trailer or bulk carrier whether directly connected to the propelling engine or not, will be considered to be part of the road fuel system. Dual fuel systems are not permitted, even where they can connect to a power take off to switch the tanks.

8.2 Unlicensed vehicles not used on public roads

A vehicle that is not used on the public road and has no licence under the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 is an excepted vehicle. If a vehicle has become untaxed since 31 January 1998 it requires a Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN). Such vehicles will be eligible to use red diesel if a SORN declaration has been made. Unlicensed vehicles that do not require a SORN will continue to be able to use red diesel without a SORN declaration if kept off-road.

Unlicensed vehicles are not permitted to run on public roads under any circumstances. HMRC will take legal action if such a vehicle is found on public roads using red diesel. Other offences beyond the scope of HMRC’s responsibility may also be committed if such a vehicle runs on public roads, even if road fuel (‘white diesel’) is being used.

Does anyone here have loyalty to a particular brand of fuel / oil and why?

For example, you might use Tesco fuel if it's local and cheap (diesel and petrol).

Also, what about 2-stroke mix; anyone bother with super unleaded, is everyone using Stihl oil at 50:1 ???

One other thing - does anyone have problems filling up "non regulation" fuel canisters (i.e. the husky cans) at petrol stations - I got so fed up with the local attendant denying me fuel because of my specialist cans that I went elsewhere...

Oh, and chain oil - Oregon???

all combies have a vapor lock spout, so ask the attendent for the paper work saying they cant let you fill all fuel cans must have a vapor lock by law . thats why when you fill your saw on a hot day it blowse out when inserted in the fuel tank that is if you havnt pushed in:confused1: said lock to exspell all the warm vapor ie vapor lock
