No point in mud rails in a chassis cab, your seat will only go as far back as the back of the cab. If you need the seat higher just remove, get some 1" box section and longer bolts. Put the seat back in using the tubing as spacers.

 

You gain quite a lot by getting a smaller steering wheel. Do you really spend that long in the cab that the space is a problem?

If he's anything like me, it's the dash that's the problem not the wheel.

 

I don't class myself as being massively tall, but at 6'2" my knees are against the dash in a truck cab tdci and if I'm honest I'm not safe driving one as it affects how I get to the pedals.

 

At least driving my mates has settled my curiosity as far as updating my td5!

Just had the tracking rods replaced on me Defender to heavy duty ones due to one of the old ones was bent. Had a look at the old bent one and was surprised to find that they are hollow. No wonder they are easy to bend! Not a moan just suprised!

I do spend a long time in the cab as I regularly work in north somerset, hampshire and surrey (from dorset thats normally two hours in each direction). Hence comfort comes Into it.

 

Smaller steering wheel is a good shout, any recommendations?

there used to be a common mod which was to sleeve over the track rod with a length of thick wall tube of the correct diameter welded at the ends.

Yea, you can get like a box that covers the rods, ordered a bash plate from Devon 4x4 that should protect it from now on.

The problem with strengthening the steering gear is that you are transferring forces to other components.

 

HD track rods are just as easy to bend when you have a vehicle pushing it.

 

Straightening a heavy duty track rod in the field is a lot harder than a standard.
