Defender was In getting an oil leak fixed under warranty so we had an evoque for a few days. It's just gone back. It was the sd4 which is top spec. I think I could love with one quite happily. It has sure got some legs for a diesel!

Anyone reccomened a heavyer duty clutch for towing please, or one that will last long. For a disco 200tdi. Thanks.

 

Generally a standard one will last well mate, I've had them last near 100k including heavy towing.

 

I think a bigger difference in clutch life can be made via driver sympathy.

Ok. Just seeing if anyone had a preference over any make or type.

 

Was pulling a heavy ish box type trailer for the lifeboat today and going up hill on motorway started to smell of burnt rubber.

 

Speed reduced to 40mph, didn't smoke out or overrun, just a smell. Soon cleared out on level or downhill.

 

Just got to tow a d class rigid lifeboat tomoz on the same route.

 

Think the clutch will need changing soon anyway.

AP Driveline formerly Borg and Beck would prob be the best of the clutches. I fitted one to my 110 3 years ago and have puled some serious loads. Main cause of a defender clutch to slip is probably oil leakage from the rear crank seal.

Clutches aren't made of rubber so its unlikely that you were smelling the clutch. More likely it just got a bit warmer than usual on the hill and the smell was detritus burning bits that are warmer than usual

I did think that but the temp gauge didn't go any higher than normal. Stayed at half way. Like it always does.

 

I thought it was the trailer at first.

 

Will find out again tomoz. Pulling a heavier load. Twin axle trailer with big rib on it. Plus engines and all bits.
