I have ARBs in both axles on one of my Landrovers. It is formidable off road, but there are some things to be aware of with any locking diffs in the axles:-

 

1) not surprisingly steering becomes a problem with the rear diff locked and the front unlocked

2) steering becomes a memory with the front diff locked. Forget it, go in a straight line.

3) the risk of breaking halfshafts increases ENORMOUSLY with the diffs locked. If three of your wheels have no traction and one has good traction, with both axle diffs locked (and the centre diff locked on a permanent 4WD model) ALL the power is transmitted to the wheel with traction and you wil break the halfshaft very easily, especially in low box.

 

Use carefully and sensibly they are fantastic. Combine them with tyre chains on all four wheels and you will be almost unstoppable.

Front axle Nigel, it's always got weight over it unlike the back end, plus you can always reverse out of trouble. I lifted the back end off the floor the other day pulling a stump :001_smile:

 

As for axle diff Nige, definately rear diff first.

 

As said its usually the rear axle carrying most weight, therefore possibility of most traction if locked.

I don't want to do extreme off roading.

 

I want a bit more grip on loose surfaces and don't want to scrat up customers lawns when pulling over trees.

 

And I want to set off with a fully loaded trailer without making a mess either.

 

The front axle lock would seem to make more sense for my purposes, but it doesn't seem the conventional thing to do???

 

Anyone else shed any light?

I fully intended to fit Axle diff locks when I bought my new defender, but whenever I have had the money spare I have always found something more important to spend it on. I think the better companies will fit uprated halfshafts with the diflock so less chance of breaking one. My original plan was to fit a compressor and use it for cleaning saws on site as well as operating the diffs. Maybe a christmas present to myself...

 

Huck was right about the landy 4x4, the reason they are generally accepted as being better than the others is their superior axle articulation: no point having a locked driven wheel if its in the air. The extra travel on the landy keeps the wheels in contact with the ground for longer.
