chainsaw licence out of date?

Ive just spoken to someone who knows a bit about this and they said, that if you have passed your certificate years ago under a different awarding body, when it changed to nptc they gave you grandfather rights, if you registered with them, however if you did not register with the new awarding body, then your qualifacation would expire at a set cut off point.

NPTC are a private company in the business of making money, like all others, its in there interest to have you renew your tickets, do you have to resit your educational certs, or your driving licence, its the same thing, youve completed the course, passed it, and been awarded a certificate, for , which I assume , you paid, as long as you yourself fell you are safe and competent, and your employer is happy...your good to go.

Those of us who are self-employed and fell every day do not need the threat of this extra expense! A refresher is a good idea but usually we have more experience than the instructor and just get left to do our own thing on the day, which i could have been in my own woods doing!

What worries me more is the standard of cutting that they now feel is acceptable as competant.

 

I realise every trainer or assessor is going to be a bit different but we still had to keep stumps low, cut toes off, sned cleanly and cross cut squarely before they were happy.

 

The number of newly trained operators that also have saw cuts in their trousers properly scares me.

High stumps get me. Wasted wood and a bumpy forwarder ride. Oh there are 4 valid reasons for the high stumps: Can't read the specs, Can't listen to the specs, can't cut to the spec and doesn't care about the spec.

Thats because the assessor has a tree surgery background not forestry? How often do you see a thread on hear about work or pricing thats shows the difference between the tree surgery world and forestry? How many people local to me were assessed by Terry Pallant or cut nosed terry now thats someone you looked up to and admired his photos!
