They (supermarkets) can sort out the details - the main thing is to show massive support for the farmers. If the shelf with the fairtrade milk is cleaned out everyday then the supermarkets will realise they're onto a winner.

 

Will the farmers get the increase? I'm sure they'll soon tell us if they don't

 

You can't try and make it perfectly fair Huck - the aim of this would be to keep some diary farmers in production. Look at systems out there that try and make things fair for everyone and take in all eventualities - they turn into monstrosities of red tape - which then use alot of the money to process the money.

 

Keep it plain and keep it simple - this is to keep diary in this country not to bring equality to all diary farmers.

 

 

 

 

This is were we already are with the EU and sub's, IMO your idea is just going to add another false force to the market.

 

IMO, all the sub's should be scraped and the market should be left to be sorted out by real market forces.

I think you're looking at farmers in general and subsidies in general. This thread and issue is just looking at Diary farmers only.

The UK farmers have been oversubsidised for many decades. Your dairy farming system is just nothing but a corrupt welfare rort.

 

The fact that you can even have farmers with 50 cow herds is beyond a joke. Its just a sponsored hobby. Our family struggled with 270 cows due to european farm subsidies killing the international price for product. During the 80's When our neighbours lost there farms with 180 cows, UK farmers with 30 cows were buying new tractors and holidaying in NZ.

I get milk delivered to my door by my local milkman, I am supporting the small man, I get eggs off him which come from a local farm too. It costs more than at Asda but I think it's worth it.

It seems that Tescos have addressed the issue of milk production - so if what they say is true at least 720 diary farmers (or 80% of these) are happy with what they get.

The farmers in the direct supply chain are ok in general, it's the ones who supply a processor who supply a supermarket which are struggling, as I understand it.

It's the likes of the cut price retailer that are doing it.

 

One is farmfoods. Two 4 pinters for £1.50, this is well below anyone else. Yeah it looks good and people will buy it but little thought to who the milk comes from.

 

I will always buy British if it helping the farmer. But then we have all seen it before when they advertise they are helping someone with a product then a few months later it's all over watchdog.
