There are many different types of boiler stove around but finding one which will burn 1m logs will be a challenge. There are also many stoves which allow you to add a boiler at a later stage - with the price of gas and electricity increasing, this is becoming a real consideration for many peopel.

This is a 6 year old thread !!!.   ( from 2012)

Under the proposed EcoDesign emissions requirements most if not all boiler stoves will be discontinued as they are currently unable to hit the emissions requirements.

I suppose you mention boiler stoves because of the way they generally cool the firebox rather than take their heat well after the flame?

I'm not really interested in a boiler but I intend to replace my Jotul 603 with something reaching the new standard but a bit lost where to start on choosing

Technically I have no idea as to the internal performance,  but many boiler stove manufacturers have already discontinued boiler stoves ( Esse for example) and at least one other major player will do so shortly unless they find a way to clean up the emissions and get improved efficiency.

Do any boiler stoves work moderately well?  I'm in a real quandry as to whether to fit one or just rely on a decent size stove to heat a small cottage.

The gasifying ones we fitted by Kunzel and Kob did but they were serious money. I just heat the space with wood and gas or electricity for hot water.

Yes they do,  Arada and Morso both make excellent boiler stoves.  However if you have a Combi Boiler for you current hot water you will need to build in a facility to automatically dump excess heat in the event of a power cut.    ( that means the water is still being heated but not being pumped around the system,  pressure then builds up in the stove due to steam)   Usually this is vented to a cold water tank but combi boilers dont have CW tanks so plumbing costs may be significant.

I was looking at the Arada Stratford 16 so good to know that.  No combi.  The  hot water and a few rads are powered from a back boiler.
