I would rather see the roof tiles. Solar panels are so ugly. A definite blot on the landscape

I agree totally but some allowances have to be made for all technology. I live in a suburb which is mildly attractive and I did think hard about this.

Locally there is a development with solar tiles and they are only conspicuous because they are slightly shinier than the rest of the roof (mock slates).

Had this house still had a slate roof I'd have considered them.

Not as bad as windfarms though. Solar panels work all the while it's light, whereas those great big steel blights which use so much carbon building and erecting only work if there's enough wind. Or not too much. Not wonder the countries that pioneered them are pulling them down.

Do solar panels not lose efficancy over time? I was looking at buying some for a shed a while back but after a lot of reading on the internet it seemed years down the line they would only produce like half of the power compared to when new

Yes they do. Performance degrades over time so they will not perform uniformly for the 25 year FIT term. This should be factored in on the sales pitch so it shouldn't be a surprise as it drops off.

In any case the technology will romp on at a pace so I can see a time when I may swap out the panels for a more efficient solution such that the tariff returns are maximised.

As others have said performance and efficiency will improve so I look forward to a much smaller setup delivering the goods in the future. That's why I put them on a frame on the ground rather than on the roof.

Yes they are ugly but that will also change in time.

Yes I did do it for the money. If anyone else can find a more ethical place to get an index linked 9% return I would be very interested.
