I don't think you need a tacho if your maximum permissable mass is less than 7.5 tonnes, you only carry your own equipment relavant to your trade and you operate within 50km of base. Depending on how it's registered/how heavy it is you will probably need a tacho in your mog, but you don't in your Canter if you stay within 50km of base (even when towing your 3.5 tonne trailer). Everyone keeps banging on about 3.5 tonne vehicles being useless for tree work - if you run them as you are with a big trailer there isn't much you can't take on day to day whilst staying legal and avoiding all the red tape that goes with the running of bigger trucks (providing your work is within 50 km of your base).

 

As far as I understand it if you train weight exceeds 3.5tonne for commerical use then tacho is required. Land rovers get exception to operators license as dual purpose but there is a limit to the unladened weight of the trailer if I recall correctly, if over this then OL is neeeded

I'm not a brand freak so I'm loyal to any chipper that does what it should. I'd like an 8-10" really.

Having said that i have a preference for Schliesing and Bandit.

Well just intrested, a few weeks back you where pulling your hair out over your bearings going and wanted a bigger mog. Then now your swapping the whole lot around for two small trucks and a tow along. I might be intrested in your mog and chipper. :001_smile:

Yeah I sort of lost the plot a bit over those bearings. I should have exercised more patience instead of expecting a free miracle.

However, a close look at my business has shown me other options, hence the changes.

So A Transit and small trailer will need a tacho?

What about if you own or buy a four year old transit, it won't have a tacho so do we now have to retro fit them?

If so this must mean that they have to come off the production line with a tacho, if destined for the UK market.

 

But I thought if we're transporting out own waste, wood chips, then we don't need a tacho so long as we're not transporting it for hire or reward. Confused:confused1:

No but you do need to keep records, see my earlier post in this thread

Not really that assumes the van is going to tow, many never see a trailer

Drivers hours rules have nothing to do with your load and if you are moving the load apart of a paying job it is for hire or reward.
