Darn it pro bros beat me to it

Could consider one o the cast Army Renault Dodge 4 by 4's that Withams has a pile o at present. I suggest this precisely because they were bought to replace LR's that did not have enough cargo/weight capacity.

Ugly as sin, and I have no idea as to their off road capabilities

I used to drive a double cab version of those Renault Dodge trucks in the early '90s. It was ex-British Rail and we used it as a fitter's truck in a granite quarry. Can't remember if it was 4x4 or not, but it was heavy and seriously underpowered

Live axles will almost always have better articulation than independent suspension, the exception being the rare extreme vehicles usually built for competitions.

However, a wheel in the air can be mitigated for by an lsd or a diff-lock - note mitigated. One wheel in the air with a locked diff will still be less torque on the ground than two wheels in the dirt.

Live axles still need articulation though. I had an old SIIA that had such saggy springs that you could pretty much get a wheel in the air mounting a kerb.

Tyres are crucial though. A Fiat Panda 4x4 on the right tyres will get further than a Land Rover on the wrong tyres. In 14 years of driving off road for work I found Land Rovers to be the best all round, and easily the best off road.
