Firewood log seasoning times?

Hi

 

Whats an ideal seasoning time for logs? We are talking just general open and closed fires and i appreciate it comes down to log size, air flow etc etc but for a general rule. Most of the woods are beech, ash, oak, laure and sycamorel we have been storing for 6months before selling is this too short a time for a well seasoned log? or should it be longer?

If you split it small then 6 months is passable, but if there is any size to the log at all then it wont be dry in the middle after 6 months.

 

Unless its been in a pollytunnel etc.

 

very much a how longs a peice of string question as there are so many variables.

Size species location air flow are all things that need to be taken into account to many variables to give a definitive answer. I have had ash in a shed with no airflow take a good 9 months then on the other hand I have had oak in billits in the field dry and ready to go in 6 months.

Doesn't laurel give off cyanide when burnt? :confused1:

I wouldn't expect any to survive oxidation in the fire.

 

I also wouldn't advise anyone to be in the back of an enclosed truck with laurel foliage being chipped into it, though I have heard no incidents of poisoning from it. Crushed laurel was used by entomologist to kill insects in jars.
