Bowline as a termination knot

If a bowline is good enough to rig large peices of wood, why is it not good enough as a termination knot. easy to tie and untie, even one handed. and I've never had it slip off a rope thimble.

It is used as a termination knot over here but not in the states i believe. When not loaded it can move and theoretically slip down onto the gate of the Krab and load it wrongly . Old habits die hard though its just such a tried and tested knot.

The bowline is a very good termination knot, the main issue being the inability to tie it tight enough to cinch down on to the carabiner, with the theoretical risk that when unloaded it can side load the gate(as born2trot said). The anchor hitch for example eliminates this risk as does the buntline.

I always use a bowline as my termination knot..with a krab..or with larger pieces in a running bowline. I hate spending needless time tieing in and having the groundies tieing and untieing knots. As long as its within your swl (and it only reduces the strength of the line by 30%)...tie it.

It can be tied pretty tight to the krab though and the Yosemite tie off is something I use all the time these days. If you use the anchor or buntline don't you loose the benefit of being able to unclip easily for changeovers and throws?

Tis the termination I used for ages then switched to the Anchor hitch and still use it. As for uncliping the Anchor,I don't, I un-tie it, advance the line, tie back on,easy. What benefits are you thinking of?

Well, er, the fact you don't have to tie and untie your termination knot. I can see there are benefits to untying it as well mind.

I use the bowline to climb on but always tuck the tail end in the loop parallel to the line coming in (sort of like away from you), and then it never seems to loosen off.

bowline with a yosemite is all i've ever used, got a decent weight to it for chucking it higher in the tree. dead quick to tie and with a bit of a loop on it keeps it clear of my hitch so no risk of it catching on it. and unlike with a spliced eye i can change the end of the rope i'm using on a regular basis to even out wear and tear on the rope.
