Some H&S report I read from USA about accidents in the Tree work industries being Struck By was the number one cause of injury and fatalities, using Platforms was also high, the safest place to be was in the tree!

 

I quite believe that struck by is probably our number one hazard in tree work.

I Agree, lots of things can cause some nasty injuries and worse!

 

I too have been hit by falling objects, however it has only been little twigs during a reduction, cueing the all important over dramatic reaction!

 

I make sure I'm well out of the way of big stuff!

I've been clipped by a buttress lifting out of the floor whilst felling. Also back in the summer, whilst subbing a customer walked into my blind drop zone whilst topping a big Connifer and got hit by a pretty big cut and chuck. the groundies had disappeared but she had it coming as there was a constant flow of them coming out, she should have realized what was going on :-) haha

I was hit fair and square with the top of a dead elm. This was pre helmet days in the early eighties. Was dismantling and the top broke out and hit me on the head. Knocked out, hanging in my Willans, cracked head and teeth smashed. Had to get myself down when I came round. Not an experience I'd wish to repeat.

i was about to say that too dead elms are not nice. in mater of fact any that been dead a while the tops brake off easly.

I was cleaning up a snow damaged cedar last February. Loads of hangers and snapped bits in the canopy. It was also VERY windy that day. As I paused and was talking to my groundy,a branch approx 3" diameter snapped out ten foot above me, just missed my head and landed butt first, spear style two foot from the groundy. It would've been very nasty had it got him
