They are the ultimate opportunists aren't they.  I was rolling some large imperfect elm rings off my pickup yesterday morning and by the time I'd got to moving the next ring a robin was exploring the mush in the previous one.

They seem to know  when its bait time aswell,always after a bit of crust

Ours are on the Common, acres of standing dead wood for them but one has popped over now n then with the Owl, Bats head back n forth too, all the Limes behind the house are a good forage route in summer. K

which is the best site to figure out what you see? especially when i only saw it from above and behind flying down a drain/stream. black with white stripe and black tail, pointed wings, bigger than thrush, quite fast flyer any suggestions

With such a limited sighting perhaps a Greater Spotted Woodpecker?  Take a look at Images and see if it's even close.

Agreed not larger than a thrush but it was a brief sighting...
