Here's some shots from yesterday..a couple are of my neighbor's crimson king maple just leafing out as it flowers. My other neighbor has a common norway. This tree and another common norway grew as seeds from the older tree, I think. Odd that the smallest one is the nice colored tree. The rest are from the Lake Wa Ship Canal locks, specifically Commodore Park, which I've been visiting regularly for a few years now. For being right in town, the numbers and variety of wildlife to view and photograph is outstanding. There's also viewing windows for when the salmon run. Spotted a harbor seal yesterday...only the head..looked rather large, but I don't think it was a sea lion. Those guys hang out at the entrance to the canal by Shilshole and all the way to the locks, and eat way too many salmon! As do the cormorants.

The Harris is a beginners bird and beginners make mistakes, but then man releasing wildlife has happen for years that's why we have Little Owls, Frenchmen and Ring Neck Parakeets and most of the Deer in this country, before I start on trees.

Took a hike up Mt finlayson today with my daughter 5.

 

Gotta be aware of the wildlife, especially with kids.

 

Took us a little over an hour and a half to the top....the last 30 was all scrambling up boulder.

 

Anyway, they're turkey vultures you can see in the tree. Never seen them stationary before let alone so many just sat together. Mainly you just see them circling very gracefully. Big birds when you seen them up close.

They non aggressive David. Just scavengers. You'll often see them just riding the thermals, quiet as anything.

 

Mt finlayson is within Goldstream provincial park....great place to visit if anyone is ever out this way. You'll see lots of Vultures, bald eagles, ravens, hawks anong other flyers. It is cougar and Black bear country also, as well as grey wolves just at the back of the malahat mountain.....but you'd be lucky to see either of those 3....or unlucky, depending. Lots of 200ft + old growth fir and cedar scattered around the place also.

One of my hens had a couple of chicks about two months ago, how do I tell what sex they are?

When they are about 3-4 months old the males have brown wings and the hens stay greyish, like the one in this picture. (It's male as you can see the redish brown starting on the wing)
