  1. One step futher, hold cord in woodland, use the same area to store cord annunally, I'm told I need planning promission, at present after 4 years building a successful business it looks like we will be forced to close, we bought a 4 area field to us as yard on 1/4 area, the rest was going to be kept as chalk grassland now planning to free range pigs, cutting our own wood which we manage for others or as a sub clearing edge heavy chestnut on forestry commission land for a fence maker. Mainly sell logs and some arb work.
  2. Unlikely to carry one tone of logs without being over weight, for you also need to add the fuel, drivers, passangers and any tools and food weight, the latter highly likely to be more than 100kg.
  3. Sorry logs are classified as industrial by planners.
  4. From just losing a planning application the planners say whenever we take wood from a woodland it has to go to an industrial site or the end user. In their eyes any wood leaving a woodland is no longer forestry, hence be careful with that thought of forestry.
  5. Fine for manufactured products for you have easily measured variables, logs have just to many variables even from the same supplier, most are loose loads, and although they can be roughtly the same length not all will be and most will be a different diamenter and then different ratio of wood spieces to each mixed load, even the moisture content is hightly likely to be different, yes I understand averages can take place but what error will you be publishing for your calculations. Then their is the service element from the supplier which is often not costed seperatly but in the order price. The biggest problem for comparission is how many of the public can tell if you delivery Horse Chustnut, Sweet chestnut, Ash, English Oak, Holm Oak, Turkey Oak, Beech, Field Maple, Hornbean, Walnut, just to name some of the hardwoods that not starting on the Spruces, by log only let alone bark, and as already said the volume or weight, and almost non of then have a moisture meter. So in the end its down to trust between the client and supplier, when the suppliers offfers a good deal the client often stayes with then, the best rule of retailing, after the first three rules. Location location location.
  6. Do both, feeling trees in gardens needs the skill of a forester, much quicker then dismantling if possiable, last winter an arb team plus council workers took 12 hours to clear two big trees over the road, broken chains and bars, a forester could have opened the road within 2-3 hours with the tools and labour they had on site. This week been out as groundy were we roped down the tree, to stop any brush/branches from falling into the neighbours garden, one 50cm bite of deadwood failed a prefect job. It was a Sycamore 20 inch dia at chest height. Today brush monkey doing forestry work on Forestry Commission Land. Climber and Cutter being the same person, He prefers forestry work bur prefers climbers pay rate. It pays on speed to do both, arb worker earn more them forestry yes, as more risk, higher insurance and hence more money, the forestry worker will have more capital outlay to earn good money. Arb and Forestry are two different skill sets, the problem is those outside the industries thick both are tree workers and they can do any treework, in realality it is rear to find both skill sets in individuals. Arb worker will generally not work for the money a forest opperation will pay, and the forest worker will not pay to get the training, their are exceptions.
  7. Have run market stalls and we use the old striped sheets that have either got pin holes in or been rubbed over the floor to many times, 6m x 18m sheet cut into two, 3m x 18m sheets covers a stack nicely whilst letting air into the sides, cord timber holds it down, and rolls out easily when you need to get into it. One year on stall, 2 years over stacks and still in use, they cost me about £35 each. My supplier is Medway Market Stalls, 30 Pier Approach Road Gillingham Kent ME7 1R I've always picked up. and not bought any for two years, changed to Gazabo tentage.
  8. If you get it for free get then to drop me some off for free. I bet it cost you time and fuel?
  9. Interesting FISA are only using existing trainers/testers form other testing bodies, who can then be check tested to their standards at a cost to the trainer so that they can then just tap into another examining board, is this good or is it just another group trying to get power, My feelings are if the examiner/trainer is good he possible has enough work so would not need to add FISA to his portfolio of examining boards, so me think they are only getting the poorer or new trainer/testers or those that are looking into getting into testing for the first time. It is similar to being able to P test in the electrical household work, the examiner can be less qualified then the examined. Personal I can rewire a 3 phase industrial building but cannot put a plug in my own Flat, but can rewire the shop below the flat plugs and all. Lets hope the HSE looks to the existing trainers/testers and looks more at getting those without any training trained before doing any tree work. And away from testing from stretch tree work with many years of experience offering them grandfather rights so the well established workers can pass on their experiences, and that are only spot tested every five years on site, Yes I think the retests should be on site, not in a test area, we do not work in test area's.
  10. If only we had someone like that near us, I'd just pick up from them and delivery it myself at a fair price, easy money. Sell mine once they are sold out.
  11. We have two, one has had this problem now for the third time, it went in under warranty the first two times, when first bought and again after about 6 months, the third time was returned and worked for just two days before repeating the same fault, in with dealer at present, cuts out when trying to rev up, cold start been changed and throttle screw adjusted under computer set up by main dealer. The other 550xp just 9 months old and had no problems, working 5-6 days each week with the saws, along with three others saws for special jobs, and with four years experience working daily with chainsaws, both woodland coppicing and arb work.
  12. On the face of it nothing wrong with your offer, therefore can only be one of two things supply and demand as already stated, the other your potential employee is not seeing the advert, are you targeting the right publications or platforms to get to the right person?
  13. Any Partnership can only have one manager, otherwise at some point it will fail when something comes up that you cannot agree with, I started off some 30 years ago in partnership and lost my brother through that partnership, he wanted out but we could not agree on the price, in the end the business just shut up, and very few words have been past since and big loss for both of us. I'm in partnership with the wife but she has little input and I have final say normally as far as you can with wife's. An accountant can charge but will keep you on the right lines if good, best advice would be talk to other small self employed people ( building trades have many) and see who they recommend and what they have to pay. My son uses a small acciount and only cost about £200 a year but is at mates rates, my total bill this year is £3K for two business, but looking to get it down.
  14. I'm trying to increase advertising on my website, its sold logs very well for my son and this year put two other log sellers onto it, check out by searching "faversham logs for sale" you should find Richards prices. If you make others money they will pay you a little each year. have good numbers and you earn good money.
  15. You have not mentioned if the 750 kg is payload or Gross trailer weight, as you need a towing test nowadays for trailers over 750 kg gross weight, unless you have grandfather rights, I take it it is gross weight in such case you need to fine your legal payload them as an estimate 1 m cube will weigh from 1/3 - 1/5 ton or 330- 500 kg. pending on type of wood, so I expect you will only get two small bags on or just the one meter bag, and them the sides are lightly to stop two bags from fitting for the total length without any bulging, would be 1.8 m which is about 6 ft, if you filled it with loose logs with a flat 6 x 4 base for every 1 ft of logs the space would be .89 of a cubic yard or about .65 of a cubic meter, so just over 3 ft high would give you 2 cubic meters or 3 small builders bags that have a volume of .65 cubic meter, that may well put you over weight. I would suggest you get a trailer and licence that will allow you to carry more. Paul Cumberland Faversham logs for sale, seasoned and cut from Kent woodland
