I've noticed over the last few months that alot of our fellow Arbtalkers (some alot more long standing than myself) aren't posting a great deal anymore. Wether starting threads or responding to one.

I think Steve and some of the Mods do a great job. please dont take this the wrong way (Mods)

Are we getting board of the "same old" chat ?

I know the down turn in work gives us (i'm not an arb man/person) less to talk/chat about. I'm only a mere firewood merchant.

your thoughts please.

I'm sort of new to the forum but one of things i have noticed is that for the amount of members very few seem to participate in any real capacity. It seems to be the same people that keep the chat going. Whether there is a fear factor of being shot down or making a mistake i dont know . Should there be a use it or lose it policy ? Genuine personal reasons obviously withstanding .:001_smile:

In my experience internet forums are not like real life, there's no real relationship there and it's very easy to become 'lapsed' and then it's difficult to start back in again.

New members come along, like me, and the dynamic changes, names become less recoginsable and so on. I've lapsed on a couple of forums, I dip in very occasionally [one's a Land Rover forum so as long as the truck's not broken down I don't need to use it - even I'm surprised how little I've been on there!] but once you move on it's weird joining in with a forum again, a bit like sleeping with an ex girlfriend... you know you used to enjoy it but now it just feels awkward...!

I am reasonably new to the forum as well and cant keep my mouth shut half the time

I think part of the problem is a lot of the threads have done the rounds several times already so some of the longer standing members are probably fed up answering the same question over and over. I have noticed in my time here a lot of the same types of threads being started more than a few times. Most members imo just use the site as a means of gaining knowledge from other threads, which is a good thing but i suppose a lot of people (maybe new to the industry) are put off of posting for fear of being shot down in flames for saying something stupid, god knows i have done it a few times and ive been doing this job long enough for things to be permasore :blushing:

Mostly I think Arbtalk is chugging along nicely and there is always plenty people joining in the discussions although some of the more silent members could do with adding their views as well imo

I went through a stage of not so many posts . my problems were a combination of poor Internet conection at my work sites And on my longer contracts i was just to tired to fire up the laptop , as the end of my 12 h shifts as was doing 11 on 3 off i just had to eat shower s and sleep and arbtalk for a time was in the distance but now for my last few contracts the hours have been great and I now have an iPad so am back in full swing arbtalk mode .

im a bit new, my inability to spell and my FAT fingers frustate me and from some of my replies the members too, in the day i have a girl who does all my typing, big words and all, Arbtalk- youd think would be Arb folk- but the mix match is a little to wide for me, The whole Arb thing on here gets me down- we judge people to easily- those who we are led to believe are the pro-knolagable ones seem to lack practical experience and those with practical experience are taken addvantage of, it does seem to me that a lot of threads get put on with out any real thought, all the ones for the crack are great and its good banter, but it does get a little bullish at times. it could just be the way people reply? but its sometimes easyer just to sit back and read rather than reply.

One of the problems with forums is interpreting the written word, as as been said above, a tongue in cheek comment can be easily taken the wrong way.

One piece of advice I would give if you take a post in a certain way, is to read the post over again and see if you can interpret it in a more positive way.

Arbtalk doesn't encourage picking someone's post to pieces, it,s here for advice and information to help people new and old the the industry. The mods don,t always pick up on bad posts be there are so many to pick through.

Using the report post button helps them tremendously if you feel a post is a bit dodgy.

People shouldn't be discouraged from posting because of the fear of being wrong or being brought down in flames

This forum is a great soure of pooled knowledge. I haven't been a member long or have I posted very often but I learn, and continue to learn, so much from, for example, the Fungi forum and the resource photos. Do I contribute? - rarely but I often use the resource to assist in the ID process.

The same goes for other areas eg "What's on your bench" - heck I even managed to change a fuel filter on a 350 the other day without any 'thing's going wrong language'.

Also must not forget Rangermatt's postings - I find it an informative illustrated seasonal record (Keep it up Matt)

There is a plethora of collective knowledge on this site and it is very much appreciated at this end.

Bob

ps Like the firewood forum too!
