The tree has historical importance

The litch gate under the large limb is 11th century

to me, looking at the balace of the tree, Id whip it of altogether, Failing that reduce it.

Reduce and brace would be my first option.

in a ideal world you would reduce and brace so if/when it desides to fall off it wont do any/ or not as much damage to the gate but its a costly thing im finding out bracing.

Actually forget removing it, just seen the back limb coming off too, just reduce it.

Get some student wallers in from the local countryside college & get them to move the target by reconstructing the gateway on to the other side of the tree

Whip it off, an 11th century lytchgate like that must be protected.

How let it get that big. Reduce by thinning would be the first step.BUT its in a church yard ? when the churchwardens make up there minds and tell the DIOCESE could take for ever to get answer back. Took my local lot 2 years to get back so do'nt hold your breather.
