Get a higher pixel camera for Christmas.....Took the wind out of my sails when I tried to crop that ! :001_tongue:

The Cams got 9.1 and x15 optical.

Twas very gloomy under that there canopy.

I've got loads to learn in terms of exposure etc.

Thought that taking thousands of shots would be the way towards photo lore,

guess I could do with getting me tutored

Monkeyed, I've seen lots of your posts and find your professionalism and attitude inspiring.

Having said that I'm intrigued to know what set of cicumstances makes it ok to do that to a tree.

As you say 'topard' - its not a proper pollard so wouldn't it have been better to just take it out completely. What about Shigo's 'tree dignity'.

Also this spikes and bats thing. I followed the sugested link for the draft, but it seems you now have to buy the finished standard. While its in the post, you couldn't quote the relevant bit could you.

Again it goes against everything we know, to use spikes on a tree that is not being removed. Bats or not its making lots of invitations for decay and pathogens at the same time as leaving the massive topping wounds.

Has someone at BSI, lost the plot

I think it would help to regard this act as habitat management rather than tree work.

The tree in question is being sacrificed to the benefit of another tree. Rather than fell the victim to ground level it’s going to fill a role as standing habitat alive or dead.

I wouldn’t have any problem using spikes in those circumstances. A few “gaff” marks pale into insignificance compared to the dinner plate sized cuts and many “batitat” cuts.

Anyone can fell a tree creating habitat is another matter.
