The resulting development project (coded Romulus) produced the 300Tdi engine. Although externally very similar to the Discovery/Range Rover version of its predecessor, 208 changes were made. These included modifications to the block, cylinder head, fuel injector system and ancillary systems. The crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods were significantly altered over the 200Tdi.[69] The most obvious external changes were the fitting of a rubber acoustic cover over the engine to reduce noise and the change to a single serpentine belt to drive the ancillaries instead of the multiple V-belts of the older engines.

we're in process of fitting a 200tdi to an old 2.5 turbo land rover.. and a 300 tdi wont fit whereas a 200 will...

 

Yes it will, as i have one in mine. The engine mounts need to be moved, and bell housing needs to be modified, and all the pipes at the front of the enginne need to be lenghtened.

Went looking at a Hi cap with the 19j engine in it-bloke selling it couldn't get it to stop blowing smoke-good vid on Youtube of one running away with itself and blowing up!

any engne will fit anything if you play about with it enough... should a said a 200 will fit straight in.. or so i'm told by our local expert...

also worth noting that if your buying just the engine and it comes out of a discovery then a few more mods need changing

They should both fit the same - the difference is in the gearbox bell housings (the R380 gearbox fitted to 300Tdis has a longer bell housing and the whole engine subsequently sits further forward in the engine bay than that on the LT77 fitted to the 200 and 2.5 turbo). If the 200 and 300 are both out of Defenders they should go straight in, Tdi engines out of Discos have the turbo located differently and this fouls in a Defender subsequently requiring more modification. They are all basically the same as the old 2.25 petrol and diesel engines - if you put all 4 cylinder LR engines side by side the blocks are pretty much identical and accept each other's engine/gearbox/flywheel mounts.
