When I was insurance assessor

Lots of old guys with aged tractors, but they had grown up with horses when you had do a bit of maintenance when they put them away, the result was their tractors lasted forever....

Also inspected a contractor who bought brand new toyota hiluxes .....and never ever opened the bonnet..... Not even for oil top ups......he ran them to 30,000 miles then partexed them ........pity the poor sods who bought them....

But it worked for him

I always advocate regular greasing of the clutch drum bearing, as dry bearings soon fail.

The nose sprocket however???? Juries still out on that.

I'd agree ref greasing the nose sprocket - it is safer not to grease it...

I think the problems come from

a) over greasing - filling the nose full of grease but not then turning it to work the excess out then revving gently for a minute or to....

b) greasing it after/before dressing the bar - filings stick to the grease...

c) greasing it without using an air line to blow out the grease hole first - or you just push grit into the bearing...

I don't think the grease attracts grit - how would grit get under the chain and onto the drive links when the chain is in use? If this was the case then the chain oil would do this...

Hmmm... starting to hi jack this thread!:blushing:

The jury decided it is not needed, as that is what the evidense show. :001_smile:

I think it it just safer not to grease rather than grease... but I don't think the noses last as long as a result... but if in doubt prob best not to do it...

Going to start a thread on this issue?
